The principal goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done.
Jean Piaget (1896-1980) Swiss cognitive psychologist.
With these opening words, I welcome all the members of this college and the invited guests to our much-awaited celebration of the session, that is, the 52nd Annual day of our college. As I suggested through the famous quote by Jean Piaget, today, I wish to highlight, in brief, that as a responsible member of an institution like Kirori Mal College, it has been my dream and effort to frame this college into a model institution, remarkable not only in its pursuit of prescribed courses, but also in its ability to interconnect with the greater values, activities and issues that surround us today, by respecting the tradition but at the same time venturing to create a new tradition based on an imagination that every honest worker has in his or her mind to make this world and its people a better one.
Before going ahead with the celebration, I would, with utmost pleasure, first like to present to ourselves our distinguished guest Mr. Rajeeva Ratna Shah, Member Secretary, Planning Commission, and Union Minister of State, Government of India. We also have with us Prof. D.B.Gupta, Chairman of the Governing Body of our College and an eminent economist.
Mr. Rajeeva Ratna Shah has been a leading member of the Indian Administrative Services for 38 years now, throughout which he has held various offices and worked in different capacities under the Government of India and the Government of the State of U.P. Prior to this, he has functioned as Secretary in Cabinet Secretariat, Departments of Information and Technology, Commerce & Industry and Planning Commission. He is also reckoned as an expert on "Convergent Digital Technologies". In his capacity as the CEO of Prasar Bharati (Public Broadcasting Corporation of India), as well as DG, AIR and DG, Doordarshan, he brought about the digitalization of TV channels and has been responsible for the introduction of FM radio broadcasting in the country. As Secretary, Department of Industrial Production and Policy, he conceptualized and put into implementation the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Programme and also has been responsible for crafting a tripartite partnership between World Economic Forum, CII and Government of India. He has been actively associated with the structuring of Jammu and Kashmir Reconstruction and Special Assistance Plan, with the development initiatives in Bihar and the NCT of Delhi, which is preparing for the coming 2010 Commonwealth Games in our country. Another remarkable aspect of his career is his steering of the Oversight Committee deliberation to monitor the implementation of Reservation of Higher Educational Institutions as its Member Secretary.
This brief sketch of our honoured guest Mr. Rajeeva Ratna Shah is a limited one and would hardly do justice to his much vibrant and variegated personality and career. With a heartfelt apology for a hurried introduction that the time and space of this function permits, I proudly and humbly welcome and thank him for gracing this important occasion of our College.
Prof. D.B.Gupta, our own Chairman of the Governing Body of Kirori Mal College as we all know, has again been kind enough to preside over today's event. As the Chairman, he has been our friend and has been responsible for the vibrancy and development of this College. Being an economist, he has worked in the Institute of Economic Growth for many years, and has been a member of the Planning Commission, Government of India. Apart from that he has been also a constant and strong representative of our nation to international organizations like the World Bank, UNDP and WHO in the deemed capacity of a Consultant.
Friends, without further delay, I would now proceed to announce the achievements of the college for this academic year 2006-07, the 52nd Annual day of our much loved College and acknowledge the contributions of the entire college community for making this session and the institution a place to be proud of. As we all know, today is the rare occasion of appraising the performances of all of us who belong and who have committed to this institution in their special ways. I call upon all my colleagues, teaching and non-teaching and the students to come together in celebrating this day, and rise above common differences to make this function a most memorable event, especially to those precious student members who will graduate from this institution in the next few months and carry forth the fame of our college to the bigger world and make us proud with their success. I congratulate every member of the college community for making this academic session a vibrant and fulfilling year.
With great humbleness, I stand here today, in front of you, in the words of the great writer, Bernard Shaw, " not as a teacher; only as a fellow traveler of whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead-ahead of myself as well as of you."
I will now proceed by announcing the academic achievements of our students, without whom our identity would be incomplete, following which I will highlight the performances of the co-curricular activities, societies and departments in alphabetical order, for matter of convenience.

Few other activities on campus can claim to be as prolific as debating. 'DebSoc', as we are called around campus, has a rather incomparable roster of prizes and awards under the leadership of our staff advisor Dr. Mrs. Sundaram Shukla.

It was organized on the 12th and 13th December 2006. The success of the events was the result of a month of the toil by the members. Starting from the scurry for sponsorships to the last minute pasting of posters all over Delhi. An exhibition of paintings and handicrafts by the members of societies was also organized. The office bearers for the year were Jaspunit Sahota as the President and Dinesh Kumar as Secretary. Special mention may be made of other members:

Garden Committee
Flowers are the most beautiful, mysterious and divine creation of nature.
Bright blooms of dahlia, dimorphotheca, gazania, hollyhock, salvia, stocks, allysum and many others have embellished our college Ashoka Lawns and Araucaria Lawns (one opposite the library) by their splash of colour as perhas never before. Resplendent blossoms of chrysanthemums, cosmos and 'cock's comb' decked the landscape even further. The natural grace and beauty of these flowers brought peace and serenity into the college environment and momentarily stimulate the senses to bring forth the naturalist, lyricist, poet or artist in all those who looked on them. Kochia and Portulacca planted last summer have grown up to add to the greenery of the rear lawns opposite the canteen.
Dr. Bhimsen Singh, together with all membersof the garden committee participated in planting Araucaria as a symbolic gesture to mark the 'plantation week' during the monsoons. Prof. Akhilesh Tyagi of the Department of Plant Molecular Biology, University of Delhi and the faculty members and students of the botany department of our college took part in the drive. Additional flowerbeds have been constructed in the sports room complex and the chemistry department, who will do their bit in promoting greenery and a stress-free, pollution-free environment for all.
The laudable state of the college gardens has been a culmination of hard work and dedication by all members of the committee. Encouragement and support of the Principal added to the synergy of effort. Dedication and sustenance of staff members, namely Shri Madan Mohan, Ved Prakash, Gishin singh, dhruv, Om Praksh, Nihal Singh, Nanhe and Gajraj has been commendable.

N.S.S.
The following are the details of the various activities organized y the N.S.S. unit of our college for 2006-07.
1. May I Help You: The N.S.S. unit started its activities this year by helping the students and parents who visited our college during the admissions for the year. A special counter was set up by the volunteers in the main courtyard to guide and help admission seekers in filling up and submitting the ICR and Admission Forms. It introduced the freshers as well as the parents to the College Rules and facilities in order to establish a relationship with them. This activity was conducted from 1 June 2006 to 15 July 2006.
2. Orientation and Enrolment: The freshers were given an introduction to the social services carried out by the N.S.S. unit. They were also given exposure to the advantages in development of their personality through social service as part of their student life and encouraged them to join the unit. There was a very positive response from our students and the campaign was held from 16 July 2006 to 31 August 2006, when a lot of students registered as members.
3. Education for All:
Education is an important asset of any individual in which the values of life, punctuality and systematic working are taught. Our school education builds the character of the students. There are man children who get education in the schools but require support and extra coaching which helps them excel in their studies. Our N.S.S.volunteers took up this project of helping in educating needy children in their day to day activities. They helped them in doing their homework, providing books to them, notebook and stationery. This activity started from 1 September 2006 and still continues.
4. Diwali - Festival of Lights: This year, in an innovative way, our volunteers celebrated Diwali with the downtrodden by distribution f lights, candles, crackers and sweets. They also distributed old clothes for the needy so that they also enjoy this festival with pomp. These activities were held on 20-21 october 2006.
5. Reading, Paper Writing and Recording for Blind Students: Our volunteers this year thoughtfully decided to help the blind students in their day to day activities by reading for them their daily lessons, helped them in writing their assignments and further, recorded the lessons for them so that they could repeatedly listen to it and understand the topic. This activity was done by our volunteers with a lot of interest and has helped the blind students. The activity was started from 1 October 206 and still continues.
6. Blood Donation Camp: Our unit held a blood donation camp on 12 february 2006 in the college premises. This has heen a very successful activity in the past few years and this year also it was a grand success.
7. Annual Festival SUPATH 2007: The Annual festival of the N.S.S. unit, SUPATH 2007, is to be held in the first week of March.
This year's activities were actively participated by all the volunteers of the N.S.S. unit but a special mention has to be made of Gaurav Chacharan, Mukesh Sharma, Surender Kumar and Anupama.
The Players
THE PLAYERS moves towards its 50th year of sustained, quality work in the theatre, we find ourselves grappling with a problem that has severely impacted cultural activity in several colleges of Delhi University. The new Internal Assessment Scheme, coupled with the increase in workload posed by the Concurrent courses, imposes great strain on students who would like to balance academic pursuits with cultural interest. This is especially noticeable in colleges where students bring to cultural production the same focus and rigour that is expected of academic work. In that sense, The Players at Kirori Mal College has been no exception - this year we have suffered dwindling membership, delays in schedules and longer working hours than is strictly desirable.
The problem is not going to disappear, and in future years we will have to devise ways of dealing with such an altered workspace.
Notwithstanding these constraints, in 2006-07 THE PLAYERS carried on with its practice of performing inside and outside campus space, with perhaps the highlight being an impromptu performance on Platform 7 of the New Delhi Railway Station while waiting for a train delayed on account of winter fog!
As for our regular activities in 2006-2007, THE PLAYERS' work schedule saw:
- 32 students produce 7 plays, of which 3 were newly created and 3 were revivals of previous productions; among other miscellaneous informal pieces.
- Combined, these plays were performed 30 times in a span of 6 months.
- And in 19 competitions, these plays won 24 prizes - 16 team prizes and 8 individual prizes.
More important than these figures, however, is the group solidarity, self-discipline and hard, creative work that keeps the group alive and ticking.
Our new plays in 2006-2007 were:
- Holi: An adaptation in Hindi of Mahesh Elkunchwar's Marathi play, directed by Karan Kohli.
- Kissa Seaton Ka: A street play on the anti-Reservation movement, directed by Niharika Mehta and Kriti Jain.
- Some Explicit Polaroids: An adaptation in English of Mark Ravenhill's play, directed by Samarth Dixit and Shaunak Sen.
As always, these stage plays were created through adaptation, editing and re-writing existing material, while our street plays were created through research, discussion and improvisations.
Over the years, The Players has begun to function as a Repertory Company - that is, as a theatre group that keeps old productions alive alongside new ones. These plays, Murdon Ka Prachar, Abducting Mallika and Nazarandaaz, along with this year's plays, took 30 performances and won 24 prizes in 19 competitions.
Apart from these performances in the campus cultural circuit, THE PLAYERS continued its tradition of offering its plays outside the University. We were also invited to perform at:
- At the Old World Theatre Festival at the India Habitat Centre in November 2006.
- At the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Ashok Hotel in November 2006.
- At the India Social Forum in November 2006.
- In the platform section of the Prithvi Theatre Festival at the Kamani in December 2006.
On 31 January and 3 February 07, we organised TheatreFest 2007, our theatre festival that showcases and discusses the best street and stage plays of the year produced by college groups.
It is a mark of The Players coming of age that this time our expert discussant for 'Sar-é-Aam', the street play festival was an ex-Players member, Nakul Sawhney, who has since passing out from Kirori Mal continued to engage with theatre and film.
Our expert discussant for 'Curtains', the stage play event, was Sukhesh Arora, trainer-director at Barry John's IMAGO THEATRE SCHOOL and founder of the YELLOWCAT THEATRE COMPANY.
As always, The Players continued to plough back the money it won as prizes into purchase of theatre equipment and books for the society's library.
The credit for continuing the tradition of quality work at THE PLAYERS goes to all its student-members. Some students, however, deserve to be singled out for their individual contributions to this year's successes:
- Tarun Sharma, Ashish Verma, Niharika Mehta, Avik Sarkar, Karan Kohli and Samarth Dixit of the final year for leading the way.
- Malay Firoz, Himanshu Kohli, Shaunak Sen, and Prashant of the second year for providing an industrious core; and
- Abhijit Das, Parth Khare, Kisley, Isha Handa, Dinker Sharma and Sargun Mehta of the first year for promising well for the future.
Parivartan, the Gender Forum
Parivartan, the Gender Forum of Kirori Mal College organized and conducted number of formal and informal discussions on various issues related to gender. In these participatory and exploratory discussions of number of burning issues like Domestic Violence Act, Rape, AIDS etc. were addressed. In order to further facilitate the qualitative functioning of the forum, the convenor, Dr. Mamta Sharma also participated in number of workshops on female foeticide, Domestic Violence Act.
The Human Rights Day was celebrated with a two days long event, in which Mrs. Brototi Dutta from Lawyers' Collective gave a presentation on the fallouts of Domestic Violence Act. There was also a discussion on Armed Forces' (Special Powers) Act, 1958. Y. Jilangamba, Research Scholar, JNU, interacted with the students on this issue. Deepa Mehta's Oscar nominated film Water was shown. A panel of gynaecologists from Delhi gynaecologist association headed by Dr. Bajaj, organized a workshop on the common problems faced by the college girls.
Parivartan, in collaboration with an NGO, "SPACE" conducted number of activities to fight the menace of AIDS. Poster exhibitions, photo exhibitions, workshop of peer leader, were also organized. As a part of awareness, musical programme on friendship was a huge success.
On the occasion of the International Women's Day, Parivartan will participate in a annual joint celebration with other women's groups and activists from Delhi, in Arts Faculty, with its own programmes, like songs and poetry reading on the 8th of March 2007. On 9th March, it will do its own programmes to mark its occasion.
The members of the forum have also been holding various internal discussions on relevant issues and topics. The role of the student members have been commendable, in their commitment to the Forum, not only as an activity area but also in terms of making people aware of the gendered way in which the society operates.
The Forum, with the help of the counselor, Ms. Lokesh, has been able to help many students with concerned problems and issues.
Some of the active student members of the Forum, who have shaped the nature of the forum are Saurav (Eco. 2nd Year), Preety (Eng. 2nd Year), Gajendra (History, 2nd Year), Anuj Mittal (Chemistry, 1st Year), Kirti Rawat (Eng. 1st Year), Pratiksha (Eng.2nd Year), Payal (Eco. 2nd Year), Sumit (B.Com.(P) 2nd Year), an Sheeba (Eng. 2nd Year).
However, it is remarkable that the level of the teaching staff's (apart from the convenor) participation and interest shown in the activities of Parivartan has been rather limited this year too, which displays an uncomfortable insight into the space amidst which a gender forum exists. Moreover, the functioning of this forum is sometimes stunted because of the bureaucratic manner in which the state organs release the funds. This sort of lacunae will only turn matters more disagreeable and difficult for the Forum, which is unlike other extra curricular societies.
Portal Committee
The www.kmcollege.com under the convenorship of Dr. Rakesh Kumar Parashar went a step ahead in bridging the gap between the users and the college digital learning environment. Our new service provider (Pathfinder eSolutions) has radically transformed the portal into a digital conclave where the visual impact can be much more than traditional classroom teaching. Many teachers have updated their profiles and started giving study materials (assignments, test, etc) for students. Earlier, during admission time the portal committee worked day and night to successfully complete the process. Now the admission process has become very simple and easy. Our college received maximum number of online applications (2546) for different courses as compared to other colleges of Delhi University. We are greatly encouraged from the response we have received from teachers, students and alumni of this College.
Worth appreciating is the work done by the portal committee comprising the following members: Dr Rakesh Parashar, Dr Seema M. Parihar, Dr. Dinesh Khattar, Dr. R.A Chaudhury, Dr.S.P.Tripathi, Dr. Mamta Sharma, Dr. Sangeeta Gadre, Dr.Rakesh Pandey, Mr. Pushpender Kumar, Mr. Deb Dulal Haldar and Ms. Sonali Patnaik.
Spic Macay
The Kirori Mal chapter of Spic Macay, continuing its rich cultural tradition, hosted Sitar Maestro Padma Bhusan Pandit Debu Chaudhuri, live in concert, on February 15, 2007. he was accompanied o the tabla by Ustad Akram Khan. Panditji enthralled and captivated the audience with his magical performance. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution from the members of the Colege Fine Arts Society for the floral decoration of the stage.
Sports
Along with academic, our sports achievements have been commendable in all the fields wherever our students have participated. As usual college received hundreds of application under sports quota for admission. It was indeed very cumbersome for various sports committees to select suitable candidates for admissions in various courses. It was perhaps due to this rigorous selection that our students brought laurels to the college. The society feels proud to announce some of the achievements in various categories.
Our Hockey team became champion for second time in a row after defeating Khalsa College, which is considered to be the best team of Delhi University. In the whole tournament it has been one-sided game for our College. With our brilliant performance, University hockey selection Committee selected six (6) students from our College to represent Delhi University. Some students need special mention as they have played junior national - Yudhisthir and Ravneet, probable senior national - Naveen Kumar, Hemant , Gurdeep and Jagdeep for their Inter University participation. One more feather is added as for the first time our College has been invited by Nehru hockey Society to participate in 'All India Champions College Hockey Tournament". Apart from this our Hockey team won championship at IIT-Delhi, and Gyan Singh Memorial Tournament.
In Chess, our College team has been giving outstanding performance for many years. This year also the team attained first position and became the champions. Our three students - Jaideep, Himanshu and Ambesh represented the University of Delhi at the Interversity Chess Tournament. The girls have also done exceptionally welll and the College looks forward to see them as champions in near future.
Our Basketball players need special appreciation for their outstanding performance as they have won Bronze Medal after many years.
